The Unique Four Horned Manx Loghtan sheep
The native breed of Manx sheep is the loghtan and is unusual in displaying a tendency for the rams to produce two or even three pairs of horns. They are a rugged and hardy breed, dating back to Viking or Celtic flocks. However by the mid 19th century the breed was threatened with extinction. Manx National Heritage developed two healthy flocks which have helped preserve the Manx loghtan and commercial flocks have since been developed both off and on the Isle of Man safeguarding the loghtan’s future.
The loghtan fleece which is an unusual light brown colour is very soft, close textured and lustrous and excellent for hand spinning. It also contains a lot of lanolin which is very good for the skin.
