Skeealyn Vannin – Stories of Mann - Manx National Heritage.

The complete collection of Manx Language archive recordings made by the Irish Folklore Commission in 1948.

A set of six CDs with a hardback book. The set contains over 5 hours of digitally re-mastered recordings of the last native Manx speakers and a selection of Manx dialect speech on five CDs. Full transcriptions and translations are included and are also contained on a sixth CD in PDF format.

These recordings were instigated by Eamon De Valera who visited the Isle of Man in 1947. On his official tour of the island he happened to meet Ned Maddrell, a native Manx speaker, and was so concerned at the vulnerability of Manx Gaelic that he offered to send a recording van to capture the last vestiges of this endangered language. Today these recordings have proved a priceless link back to the native Manx speakers for modern Manx linguists and have ensured the survival of the language.
