Celtic Manx

Amongst the most outstanding antiquities of the Isle of Man are the carved slabs of local stone bearing cross designs, mostly used as grave markers.  Over 200 crosses, dating from the 7th to 11th centuries, show a remarkable flowering of artistic achievement inspired by Celtic and Scandinavian traditions.

The memorial inscription on Gaut’s Cross-slab, Kirk Michael, reads “Gaut made this and all in Man”.  Gaut worked in Mann about the middle of the tenth century and appears to have been a sculptor of considerable ability.  The treatment of the cross-head is a characteristic feature of his work, as is the distinctive ring-chain pattern, formed of three interlacing chains, and which became a common feature of many later Manx cross-slabs.
